How can we help students develop their imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills with writing? How can we inspire them to find their voice as writers?
Forest View is one of three Durham Public Schools collaborating with Duke’s Thompson Writing Program to work through these questions and explore possibilities for long-term writing-based projects at our school. This collaboration, the Duke-Durham Writes Studio, launched on September 10th and continues through the end of April. Forest View’s group includes Media Center Director Kathleen Graves, fifth-grade teacher Lo DeWalt, and parent Sneha Shah Coltrane. They will meet throughout the year with working groups from Hillside High School and Lakewood Middle Montessori to develop proposals to share in a public presentation in April.
We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out.–Ray Bradbury
