Parents comment on their dinner with school board members

On Thursday, March 28, Forest View parents Jennifer Ahern-Dodson, Mara Deutch, and Latishia Futrell represented Forest View at the Durham Public Schools Be Our Guest Dinner. These dinners, offered monthly, are designed “to strengthen relationships between the Board of Education and parents” by offering parents the opportunity to talk with school board members in a small group setting. On the 28th, families from Forest View, Glenn, Hillandale, RN Harris, Northern, and Southern enjoyed barbecue prepared by students in the Culinary Arts program at  Northern High School and robust conversation with school board members.  Here’s what some of our parents had to say about the experience:

I enjoyed the Be our Guest dinner as it allowed me to interact with parents from other school sites and grade levels. Hearing their feedback was insightful. Also, the opportunity to ask the DPS Superintendent, Dr. Becoats questions directly was a highlight of the evening. The food and fellowship, is a great idea and very rewarding. I would encourage parents to attend when invited.

I appreciated the opportunity to meet other families with a strong commitment to public education and to discuss both the strengths and the challenges facing our schools. School board members Minnie Forte-Brown and Leigh Bordley joined our table, which included two RN Harris parents and two Forest View parents. They asked us lots of questions about our experience as elementary parents and listened to our ideas for our school and our district.  I felt a stronger sense of Durham community after this dinner and would welcome more cross-school exchanges this one.  —-Jennifer Ahern-Dodson, 3rd grade parent
